Cost of Education and Living

Before deciding to study Ireland, you should be aware of the cost of education and be living in Ireland. Though the cost of living in Ireland is manageable, it varies depending on town and city. Dublin being the capital city of Ireland is the most expensive place to live. Cost of living will differ depending upon the location of the institution, the type of accommodation preferred and on the personal expenditure of the student.

Precisely we can't calculate the cost of living in Ireland. But, on average we estimate that a student needs to spend between €10,000 and €15,000 per year to live here. These estimates include rent, electricity, food, books and laundry and medicine as well as travel passes and social expenses, but exclude tuition fees. The tuition fee depends on the institution and the study programme you choose to study in Ireland.

Education System

Ireland has one of the best education systems in the world according to the IMD World Competitiveness Center. The quality of the Ireland education system is a major contributing factor to the rapid rate of economic growth Ireland has experienced over the last few decades. The Irish education system is made up of primary, secondary, third-level, and further education. Education is compulsory for children from the ages of six to sixteen or until students have completed three years of second-level education.

The third level education is made up of a number of sectors such as the university sector, the technology sector and the colleges of education are substantially funded by the State. For the universities sector, there are seven universities which are autonomous and self-governing. They offer degree programmes at bachelor, masters and doctorate level. The technological sector includes institutes of technology which provide programmes of education and training in areas such as business, science, engineering, linguistics and music to certificate, diploma and degree levels. The Department of Education and Skills has overall responsibility for the sector.

Work Prospects

International students registered as a full-time in a course of one year’s duration are entitled to seek employment, but that particular course must be listed on a Special Register of Programmes. This measurement is to close off the possibility followed by some people to remain in Ireland by enrolling in a short language course and then working full time. It also ensures that a student doesn’t miss his/her studies.

If you plan to study in Ireland on a program recognized by the Internationalization Register you will receive a ‘stamp number 2’. Students holding a valid immigration stamp 2  permission will be permitted to work 20 hours per week during term time and up to 40 hours per week during scheduled holiday periods. Once you finish your course of study your permission to work in Ireland ends. In case your course isn’t listed on the Internationalization Register, you will receive a ‘stamp number 2A’ on your passport and you are not entitled to work in Ireland during your studies.

Visa Requirements

You'll need to check Ireland's visa and passport requirements before you begin your visit. Like most other countries, Ireland requires international students to have a visa to study in Ireland. If you are a citizen of any of the non-EU countries you must apply for a visa in order to study in Ireland. If you do require a student visa for Ireland, you will need to make your application at least a few months before traveling. It is very important to meet some eligibility criteria which you need to prove to the Ireland immigration authorities before you apply for the student visa. Once you are sure that you are eligible to apply for an Ireland student visa you can go ahead with the required documentation procedures.

Another important thing about Irish student visa is that it does not automatically allow multiple entries into the country. If you think you will need to leave the country and return during your studies, you will need to apply for a re-entry visa. An expert education consultant could help you get your student visa to Ireland.
